Sandy tan earth broken by patches of dry scrub vegetation and darker soil shadow — Contested Sands captures the look of the North African desert, the Mediterranean littoral, the Middle Eastern campaign theatre, and the ancient battlegrounds of Greece, Persia, and Rome with equal conviction. It's the universal arid battlefield mat, and it works across four thousand years of warfare without looking out of place for a second.
Like every FeltPro™ mat, Contested Sands earns its keep the moment you build under it. Drape it over rocks, foam blocks, or scatter terrain and the flat desert floor becomes a landscape with genuine relief — wadis and dry riverbeds sink into the ground, rocky ridgelines push up through the sandy surface, and low dunes form wherever you want them. The scrub patches print at just the right density to suggest vegetation without crowding the table — your scatter terrain reads as oases, ruins, and rocky outcrops against the bare ground exactly as it should.
Add FeltPro™ Cut & Play Roads and Rivers to trace a desert track or seasonal watercourse across the table, and the system handles everything from a Napoleonic Egyptian campaign to a modern asymmetric skirmish without missing a beat.
